Pakistan: Unknown Virus Attacks Cotton Crop

MIRPURKHAS - The Sindh cotton crop is hit by an unknown virus as both growers and Agriculture Department are finding ways to tackle it. The virus has come inspite of using pesticides and is expected to further worsen the situation due to the recent rains. The virus is seen to be flourishing in moisture.

The virus has attacked standing cotton crops in many parts of interior Sindh. According to growers, leaves of the cotton plants start drying after the virus attack. The virus completely destroys the crop.

The Agriculture Department has set up emergency centers in Mirpurkhas district for information and assistance with respect to the virus. The centers will work round the clock.

The Emergency centers will give information about the virus and will provide assistance with respect to the virus.

EDO Agriculture Ghulamullah Jarwar said that so far the virus has hit 20 per cent of the total cotton crops. In Mirpurkhas district alone, cotton is cultivated over an area of 37,000 hectares. The EDO further said that only the research department could find a viable solution to this problem.
