How do you know which fish to buy, considering the declining fish population?

How do you know which fish to buy, considering the declining fish population? The California Academy of Sciences has published a guide so that you will know which seafood selections are environmentally responsible.

Jerry Kay spoke with CAS's Dr. John McCosker:

Listen to EarthNews Radio: Sensible Seafood Choices

McCosker says that fish that are fast-growing are good choices: sardines are a good example. Nets used to catch sardines generally only catch sardines. On the other hand, a shrimp trawler that scrapes the bottom of the ocean causes a lot of destruction.

The guide can be carried in your pocket, and more and more people are bringing it with them to restaurants, so they can make sensible choices. Restaurants and stores respond to market forces, so you can be part of the solution to over-fishing and environmentally unfriendly seafood growing and gathering methods.
