With pride and appreciation we recognize the many ways in which a diverse sampling of our affiliates are making a real difference on April 22nd, 2006 ”“ the 36th anniversary of Earth Day.
Forest Guardians, a non-profit environmental advocacy organization, will be hosting its 4th annual Stream Team river restoration event for Earth Day. Volunteers will plant thousands of native trees along the degraded Rio Puerco in central New Mexico in an effort to heal this waterway from over a century of overgrazing by livestock.
Similarly, in Montana, the THI StreamTeam coordinated by Trout Headwaters, Inc. will be cleaning up Livingston’s Fleshman Creek. Trash and debris in the stream and along shorelines can be harmful to fish and other wildlife, so StreamTeam volunteers will be out in force this year, just as they have been for the past six.
Three ENN affiliates wrote in to say they’ll be heading to the Los Angeles Convention Center this Earth Day weekend to participate in the first-ever all-natural parenting expo. The Whole Children Whole Planet Expo will address the need for education about important environmental and health issues for protecting children and the planet.
ENN friends with a presence at the expo will include the Love Planet Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to creating educational media events that inspire social and environmental awareness, and Wild Planet, Inc., an independent gourmet specialty seafood company whose CEO, Chen-Ley Ong, will speak about how conserving oceans can reduce toxins in the food supply.
Also at Whole Children, Whole Planet, Robina Suwol, Executive Director of California Safe Schools (CSS) will participate on a panel with actor Ed Begley Jr. and others discussing environmental health and safety at schools. A groundbreaking policy created by CSS has become the national model for school and communities.
Everyday is "earth day" for the folks at the Burns Bog Conservation Society. They report that they will be spending April 22nd giving a tour of the Delta Nature Reserve on the edge of Burns Bog and developing education material for their summer day camp.
On Sunday, Midland School in Santa Barbara County, will host a free community workshop on the scientific, environmental, economic, and practical aspects of solar energy. Midland students and faculty will be the speakers.
Consumer advocate Debra Lynn Dadd, hailed as “The Queen of Green” by The New York Times, will be hard at work educating her community about how they can eliminate toxic chemicals from their homes and the environment.
Not only is April 22nd Earth Day, it’s also the first day of National Wildlife Week (through April 30). This week, designated by Congress more than 50 years ago, and coordinated by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), will feature conservation service projects, a National Wildlife Watch, and a wildlife education component in 2006. Recognizing that many cities across the country are providing energy-efficient, minimally polluting, healthy living spaces, TheGreenGuide.com is celebrating Earth Day by presenting its report on the cities whose green achievements set the standard for others.
At the 92nd Annual UC Davis Picnic Day on Saturday, University of California’s Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program will be showcasing information on how to manage urban pests using IPM, how to reduce pesticide use, and promote water quality.
