Keep Green Going

KeepGreenGoing is a blog developed for anyone who wants to become more environmentally friendly. With the overwhelming amount of “green marketing” taking place by Corporate America, it’s hard to know how to take the initial steps and what to believe when trying to go green. At KeepGreenGoing we believe being green is a lifestyle, not just a trend. That’s why we thrive on building an informational foundation through the power of community in a simplistic way. Here you will find articles that provide you with everyday tips to keep your green life alive and progressing.

Conflicts with Cotton
May 9, 2008 09:08 AM - , Keep Green Going

Have you ever thought about your clothing and the effects on the earth? What if I told you that the way cotton is currently grown and harvested, it endangers lives? Conventional cotton is causing extreme concerns and here’s why. Tons and tons of pesticides are sprayed on cotton fileds every year to eradicate a little bug known as the boll weevil. The problem with using poison to kill one bug is that it kills all the other beneficial insects that keep nature on track.

How many of you drink from a Nalgene bottle? What’s the number within the triangle on the bottom? If you’ve got the wrong number down there you may be putting yourself at risk. You’ve probably seen something in the news lately that some plastics are getting a lot of negative press; most notably, drinking bottles made with hard plastic.

Experiment in Vegetarianism Part 1
April 13, 2008 09:32 AM - , Keep Green Going

Did you know that when you eat beans rather than beef you use 1/27 the amount of fossil fuel to produce the equivalent nutritional/caloric value? Here is the story folks - eating as much factory farmed meat as we do in the United States is environmental suicide. Here are a couple points from earthsave.org:

Wal-Mart Finally Wants to Maximize Profits
April 11, 2008 09:09 AM - , Keep Green Going

Sounds a bit goofy, doesn’t it? But Mr. H. Lee Scott, Jr., the oft-maligned president and CEO of Wal-Mart, said about as much during an interesting Q&A session last month at an economics conference in California devoted to discussing “environmental capital.” (As a bonus, click the embedded video for a confusing conversation circling the topic of bottled water).

Re-classify Your Garbage
April 9, 2008 09:22 AM - , Keep Green Going

Ever feel like everything you learned in college amounted to a pile of trash? Now, how about if that were a positive? In a piece that ran in the New York Times last week, Edward Rothstein turns a cultural critic’s eye on garbage in the modern age, referencing an NYU course offered last fall on creating a museum for the Department of Sanitation (from the syllabus: “What is the cognitive, practical, and cultural role of garbage in contemporary life?”) while making some wry observations about how and why we’ve come full-circle to embrace our refuse.

Vegetarian or Vegan...but Why?
March 28, 2008 11:06 PM - , Keep Green Going

Every wonder why people “go to the extreme” of being vegetarian or vegan? The philosophy behind veganism stands on the precept that we, as humans, do not have any right to “use” animals for anything. Furthermore, our use of animals, which have no choice in the matter, is a form of exploitation. A vegan lifestyle avoids, to the extent that is possible, all forms of that exploitation. A vegan chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products including dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals.
