How Green Is Your College? Greener Than You May Think.

NEW YORK - Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing environmental risk are now on the forefront of many companies' and universities business strategies. Some of today's largest and most influential institutions have made enormous investments in renewable energy. It's important because, for the average college or university in the US, electricity consumption represents approximately 20% of total greenhouse gas emissions.



-- New York University (NYU) is the largest green power purchaser among higher education institutions, buying more than 118 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually.


-- In the recently released College Sustainability Report Card 2007, four institutions tied for the highest sustainability rating: Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Stanford University, and Williams College.


-- College and university students are actively petitioning administrators to increase renewable energy purchases. Students at Warren Wilson College recently voted to have their fees increased by $20-$25/year in order to purchase 100% green power for the campus.

-- In a recent vote, 91% of undergrads at the University of Maryland recently came out in favor of raising student fees in an effort to make their school the largest purchaser of clean power among institutions of higher education.


-- Colleges and universities are integrating sustainability into their food procurement and preparation, Columbia is a leader in this area purchasing local, organic, and fair-trade products as well as planning seasonal menus for dining facilities.


-- There are over 16 MWs of renewable generation capacity installed at Colleges and universities across the U.S., with the two largest facilities located at Carleton College and the University of Minnesota,Morris.


-- Graduates from more than 110 colleges and universities have taken a pledge to "explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences" of jobs they accept after graduation.


-- 77 colleges and universities, from 25 states, are members of the EPA's Green Power Partnership. Of these, 8 are located in New York State and purchase nearly 270,000,000 kWhs annually, close to 15% of total purchases by institutions of higher education.


-- More than 330 colleges and universities have committed to developing a comprehensive plan to achieve carbon neutrality through participation in the President's Climate Commitment, 23 of these are located in New York State.


-- More than 55 projects at colleges and universities, equaling over 4,400,000 ft(2), have been certified under the U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program.


The number of these certifications has been nearly doubling each year since 2001.
