Retailers Propose Logo to Make Recycling Easier

Recycling of packaging in Britain could soon become much easier as the British Retail Consortium and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have developed a standard series of logos to help consumers identify the likelihood that products will be recycled.

Three different symbols would be used as part of the system: one for “widely recyclable” items (more than 65 percent of authorities will collect it), one for “check locally” items (20-65 percent) and one for “not currently recycled” items (less than 20 percent).

The goal of the new system is to curb frustration of consumers who are not sure which items can be recycled by letting them play the odds. The new labels are still in development stage, but it is expected they will be rolled out on packaging in 2008.
