Top 7 Ways You Can Save the Earth While Getting In Shape

Soon-to-be-President Barack Obama is expected to implement nationwide energy-saving, eco-friendly initiatives and people everywhere are seeking ways to join him.

And it’s not just US citizens who are marching to the beat of a green drummer. Globally people are actively making choices to reduce their carbon footprint and live greener lifestyles. And when they choose greener it means all types of healthy living including physical health.

Here are 7 ways to do just that — go green and get fit.

1- Quit the gym. Yes that’s right — quit your gym. Stop driving your car to get there too! The majority of people who join a gym in January stop going by March. And who can blame them? How fun is it feel like a rodent running to nowhere on the treadmill? Exercise must be fun or you’ll stop doing it. So quit the gym and get outside. You’ll use less fuel and less electricity when you use your bike or your feet to get fit. If it’s cold where you live pick up some eco-friendly gear at http://www.greengurugear.com/

2- Don’t buy home exercise equipment. You read that right — don’t buy a hamstermill (or what’s commonly called a treadmill) or a stairclimber (where exactly are you climbing to anyway?). The CDC reports 40% of all home exercise equipment doesn’t get used. Keep your money for other things! And keep your carbon footprint low by exercising outside instead of buying exercise equipment you won’t use.

3- Don’t drive for short trips — walk. Save yourself the hassle of traffic, parking in overcrowded lots and dealing with overzealous drivers. If your trip is less than a 5 minute drive leave your car at home. Use your legs and get some cardio — it’s better for you!

4- Plant some trees. You’ll get a good workout while being outdoors and you’ll create more oxygen for Mother Earth. It’s a win-win for everyone. Want to join others doing the same thing? Join forces with The Nature Conservancy at http://www.plantabillion.org/ or the National Arbor Day Foundation: http://www.arborday.org/

5- Start composting. It’s not just for Yerba-drinking hemp-wearing hippies anymore. Join the composting club. All of that dirt-digging, garbage-clearing activity builds muscles too so you’re helping the environment and yourself. Need more info? Get it here: http://www.howtocompost.org/

6- Ride an Optibike. Electric bikes are the wave of the future. They’re fast and use very little of our finite resources. The Optibike for example uses about 10 cents worth of electricity to charge a full battery and gets the energy equivalent of about 2,000 MPG! Electric bikes are definitely one of the easiest, cleanest and — most importantly — fastest ways to get fit and lower the amount of pollution you produce. 7- Start a Ride to Work club. Your club can decide together how you all would like to ride to work. Do you want to ride your bikes? Do you want to ride roller blades? Or do you want to go the old-fashioned route of carpooling? It’s up to you and your club mates but decide together. http://www.ridetowork.org/

These are 7 ways you can get creative, have fun, go green and get in shape! There are plenty more options out there, and with the new year coming- now is the time!
