TWS RELEASES POSITION STATEMENT ON LEAD IN AMMUNITION AND FISHING TACKLE
BETHESDA, MD -- At a July meeting in Chicago, Illinois, The Wildlife Society (TWS) Council approved its newest position statement "Lead in Ammunition and Fishing Tackle." This position statement, based on scientific data summarized in the joint 2008 TWS/American Fisheries Society technical review "Sources and Implications of Lead Ammunition and Fishing Tackle on Natural Resources." was reviewed by TWS members, and approved after more than a year in development.
"Lead deposited by recreational hunters, shooters, and anglers has adversely affected wildlife in some areas" stated Barnett A. Rattner, USGS contaminants expert and Chairman of the committee that authored the technical review. A federal ban on lead shot for waterfowl hunting in 1991, which TWS supported, has successfully prevented wildlife deaths from lead poisoning. Added Michael Hutchins, executive director/CEO of TWS, "TWS strongly supports our nation's hunting and fishing traditions; however, we also want to prevent potential lead toxicity associated with these outdoor activities from adversely affecting wildlife and possibly humans."
In particular, this position statement calls for the replacement of lead-based ammunition and fishing tackle with non-toxic products where practicable." We recognize the crucial role hunters and anglers play in wildlife management and conservation, particularly in funding through licenses and excise taxes on sporting equipment sales," continued Tom Franklin, president of TWS. "We also see the need for greater public awareness and understanding of the effects of lead deposition on wildlife. We think the responsible thing to do is to encourage the use of non-toxic components for ammunition and gear used for hunting and fishing."
This position statement was drafted by a committee of experts, reviewed by the membership, and approved by The Wildlife Society Council. The final statement is available at www.wildlife.org. Pursuant to TWS policy, the statement will be reviewed in five years.
