In California, Conservationists and Cattle Ranchers Work Together for Habitat Biodiversity

(Washington) A unique partnership in California is benefitting both the cattle industry and wetlands. The California Rangeland Coalition is bringing together unusual allies-conservationist and cattle ranchers-to highlight the benefits of managed grazing and land stewardship for habitat biodiversity on California's vast rangelands. The partnership is attracting conservation dollars and aiding the sustainability of ranching as a livelihood. Read more about this innovative effort in the November-December 2009 issue of the National Wetlands Newsletter. Funding for this issue was provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Also in this issue:

  • The Wisconsin Wetlands Association recently began their statewide Wetland Gems project this year. In the NWN's Communication column, Katie Beilfuss looks at how the effort has galvanized support and is fostering both public and political interest in protecting and admiring these important natural treasures.
  • Profs. Royal Gardner and Theresa Pulley Radwan at Stetson University College of Law explore the sometimes complicated legal structures for wetland mitigation sites. The authors provide a common-sense walk through for regulators in how to understand who has legal responsibility for the mitigation site.
  • Glenn Barnes, Project Director for the Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina, offers the final article in a three-part series on sustainable financing for state and tribal wetland programs, looking at how state and tribal wetlands program can build their program's nest egg and achieve their mission.
  • Scientists from the United States and New Zealand compare and contrast the two countries different approaches to managing wetlands and agriculture.
