The website's gulf spill page provides links for readers to make donations to NRDC, Oceana, Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club, Audubon, the Wilderness Society, and other organizations focused on saving the oceans.
Living Green Magazine has also set up discussion forums on its Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Living-Green-Magazine/108633967564?ref=ts and on the website at http://www.livinggreenmag.com/crap.htm. There, people can express their feelings about the spill, tell others where they can get involved, share how they are helping out, upload links to events, photos, videos, etc.
Executive editor Richard Kujawski believes that the spill is a wake-up call for the U.S. "Until our country is truly 'beyond petroleum,' America's coastal waters will be subjected to man-made environmental disasters like the ongoing BP crude oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This spill demonstrates how important it is to develop alternative and renewable forms of energy to end our fossil fuel addiction."
Marco Britt, creative director for the online publication, points out that new scientific estimates about the real size of the spill are at least 10 times higher than the 5000 barrels a day being reported to the media. He notes that the mile-deep oil spill will eclipse the environmental and economic devastation caused by the Exxon Valdez oil tanker in Prince William Sound, Alaska in 1989.
The ongoing spill threatens the Gulf Coast's fishing and tourist industries, sensitive aquatic habitats, ecologically-rich marshlands, and the countless migrating and nesting birds unfortunate enough to be exposed to the destructive oil slick.
Living Green Magazine is read by consumers, business people, and concerned citizens around the world. Articles are contributed by experts in nutrition, green lifestyle, renewable energy, climate change, and other environmental areas.
The publication plans to continue its focus on the massive spill to help Americans grasp the full scope and extent of the environmental and economic impact. Their widget, which highlights the gulf spill page, is available at http://www.livinggreenmag.com/widget.html.
