Blue Ocean Institute Has Changed its Name to The Safina Center at Stony Brook University

STONY BROOK, NY, May 29, 2014 - Blue Ocean Institute, established in 2003 by conservation pioneer Dr. Carl Safina, has changed its name to The Safina Center at Stony Brook University.

Why the name change, why now?
Three reasons: infringement, consolidation and expanded focus.

  1. There’s been a recent proliferation of organizations using “Blue Ocean” in their name. There is a Blue Ocean management strategy, scuba conservation project, film festival, and even a new evangelical Christian group named Blue Ocean Faith. In our Web-based world, the proliferation of such infringement can confuse people and diminish our signal.
  2. Stony Brook University recently established the Carl Safina Endowed Research Professorship for Nature and Humanity. Blue Ocean Institute’s founder is the inaugural holder of that professorship. By changing our name to The Safina Center at Stony Brook University, we are able to consolidate our identity and location.
  3. We are expanding our focus beyond marine environments, to certain other conservation topics that aren’t strictly ocean-oriented.
About The Safina Center:
Author and scientist Dr. Carl Safina founded The Safina Center (formerly Blue Ocean Institute) in 2003. Work Statement:
The Safina Center creates an original blend of science, art and literature that inspires a deeper connection with nature. We create books, films, and television content and appear frequently on major media; we teach and lecture widely and create solution-oriented conservation projects that instill hope and help restore a better living balance on the issues we confront.

The Safina Center is based in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. We are also affiliated with the University’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.
