Nov. 30—The ceiling-tile recycling program of Armstrong World Industries now has reclaimed 20 million square feet of old tiles, the company said Monday.

The unique program, launched in 1999, allows building owners to ship old ceiling tiles, at Armstrong's expense, to an Armstrong ceiling-manufacturing plant rather than a landfill.

The old tiles do not have to be Armstrong products. Lancaster-based Armstrong, the nation's largest producer of ceiling tiles, uses the old tiles as raw material for new tiles, made in Marietta and St. Helens, Ore.

Among the contributors to the 7,100 tons of recycled tiles — enough to cover 349 football fields — are Nike, Microsoft, Pfizer, Food Lion, the World Bank and School District of Philadelphia.
