American waistlines continue to grow, yet the food industry continues to successfully market junk food. Some 60% of Americans are overweight.

ENN's Jerry Kay and Katrina Rill spoke with Marion Nestle, professor at the Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health department at New York University and food-policy expert.

Listen to EarthNews Radio: Junk Food and Our Waistlines.

She says that the issue of junk food is different than that of cigarettes. The latter is just one product, with one simple message for good health: don't smoke. But each food product is just one part of an overall complex diet, meaning that the maker of each food product can legitimately make the case that the one food product isn't the cause of a bad diet.

Nestle says however that we know that children who are drinking soft drinks are getting more calories than children who aren't.
