Jacke says the idea is to create a perennial polyculture of multipurpose plants. This means that the plants have up to a 3000 year life span, there is a mix of species within each patch of the garden, and the plants each have several uses for humans.

Some forest gardens are as small as 20 x 30 feet, and if well designed, can produce a large amount of food. Several species of dwarf trees that are only four or five feet tall can produce an incredible amount of fruit.
