MINEOLA, New York — Long Island native Alec Baldwin has given his support to plans for an offshore wind park being pitched by the Long Island Power Authority.
The actor has recorded radio spots stressing the need to reduce Long Island's dependence on fossil fuels by adopting clean alternative energy sources, including the wind park.
"Harvesting our offshore winds to produce pollution-free energy is a forward-looking solution that protects public health, the environment and the region's quality of life," the 47-year-old says in the radio ads.
The Power Authority and FPL Energy have filed an application with the Army Corps of Engineers to create a "wind energy park" featuring 40 turbines in an 8-square-mile (21-square-kilometer) area in the Atlantic Ocean south of Jones Beach. If approved, the park could be in operation by 2008, officials said.
Other supporters include Philippe Cousteau, the grandson of marine scientist Jacques Cousteau.

Baldwin, one of the stars of "The Aviator" and Oscar-nominated for his role in 2003's "The Cooler," is often called "the bloviator" by the tabloids for spewing hot air on a variety of topics from politics to the environment.
