In addition, Canada will ban construction of "dirty" coal-fired power plants by 2012, Baird said in a statement.

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Oil sands plants starting up in 2012 and beyond will need to implement carbon capture and storage technology as Canada aims to meet its target for greenhouse gas emission cuts, Environment Minister John Baird said on Monday.

In addition, Canada will ban construction of "dirty" coal-fired power plants by 2012, Baird said in a statement.

The measures are part of a series of plans to help cut national carbon emissions 20 percent by 2020.

The government also wants to set up a carbon emissions trading scheme.
