New Paper Recycling Mill Opens In NY

/top_stories/article/37869

A new, expanded paper mill on Staten Island will help New York City reach its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2030, reports NY1.

In the past, Pratt Industries had to ship paper to other plants, but the new paper mill will allow the company to turn paper into corrugated cardboard on site.

Pratt Industries recycles 200,000 tons of paper a year and is the largest paper mill in New York City, according to SILive.

NYC Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, is enthusiastic about the new mill.

“This expansion advances two goals that are essential to our city’s future: Creating new jobs and promoting environmental sustainability, which in today’s economy go hand-in-hand,”¯ Bloomberg told SILive. ”¯The recycling that happens here is also a vital part of the city’s Solid Waste Management Plan: this plant recycles approximately 1,100 tons of waste paper and old corrugated containers every day - preventing the release of 1,200 tons of carbon emissions and saving the equivalent of 17,000 trees.”¯
