Hurricane Ida continues to move north towards the US Gulf Coast this morning. At 3 am it was in the central part of the Gulf of Mexico, moving north-northeastward at 16 mph. Winds have decreased to 80 miles per hour with higher gusts.

A turn toward the north with an increase in forward speed is expected today, followed by a turn toward the Norteast on Tuesday. Ida is expected to make landfall overnight. With continued weakening, Ida’s main danger appears to be heavy rains with up to 8 inches in some areas, and a large storm surge which could raise water levels by as much as 4 to 6 feet, accompanied by large and destructive waves.
