One of the major barriers to mass market acceptance of hydrogen fueled vehicles is the expensive platinum catalyst required to operate hydrogen fuel cells efficiently.

In an effort to bring down the cost of hydrogen fuel cells, research led by Sandia and the University of California, Mercedused a dirt-cheap compound to create an uneven surface that resembles a plant’s leaves. The extra surface area helps catalyze hydrogen almost as well as platinum does.
