SMART Papers Earns Forest Stewardship Council Credentials

SMART Papers today announced an expanded lineup of environmentally friendly printing papers including new Forest Stewardship Council certification of one of its 100% post-consumer waste uncoated papers in its Torchglow printing papers line.

HAMILTON, Ohio — SMART Papers today announced an expanded lineup of environmentally friendly printing papers including new Forest Stewardship Council certification of one of its 100% post-consumer waste uncoated papers in its Torchglow printing papers line.


The company also announced it has added two newly improved 100% PCW papers to its wide-selling Synergy writing, text and cover gradeline.


SMART Papers is North America's largest independent manufacturer and marketer of premium coated and uncoated printing papers. Last year, SMART Papers became the first North American paper manufacturer to triple the standard for post-consumer waste content in premium coated printing papers.


Torchglow Multipurpose ECO-100PCW is manufactured with 100% post-consumer waste and is process-chlorine and acid free. Specifying papers with FSC certification allows graphics professionals to support the growth of responsible forest management worldwide.


Torchglow is a highly versatile sheet and is intended for multifunctional use. ECO-100PCW has been engineered for high-speed laser, inkjet and traditional offset presses. It has outstanding opacity and features 92-brightness. It is available in 20- and 24- lb. basis weights; additional sizes and weights are available on minimum order sizes.


In response to growing demand for higher-quality premium PCW papers, the Synergy writing, text and cover gradeline features an improved Synergy White 100PCW with 95-brightness and Natural 100PCW sheets. All other Synergy products contain 30% PCW.


SMART Papers began making part of its flagship coated paper gradelines, Kromekote, including the ultra-luxe Kromekote Glass, with 30% PCW in early 2004. At the same time, it also raised the PCW content of its entire Knightkote Matte gradeline to 30%.


These moves represent a major new initiative by SMART Papers to set new, higher environmental standards for premium coated and uncoated papers in North America. These papers are used in everything from annual reports and corporate marketing materials to labels and book covers. They are also used extensively in digital printing.


The Forest Stewardship Council is an international, independent, not-for-profit organization made up of social, environmental, and business representatives. FSC sets forth principles, criteria, and standards that span economic, social, and environmental concerns.
