Demonstration Launched for Diesel Locomotive Catalyst System in Boston Commuter Trains

The installation calls for the installation of 16 XTRM Cat catalysts into a 16 cylinder two-stroke diesel locomotive engine being used in a commuter rail train. MJ Bradley & Associates, Inc. (MJBA), a US based emission consulting firm will be working with ESW, the Environmental Protection Agency, and MBTA to manage the technical demonstration aspects of the project. MJ Bradley will also be involved with the coordination of the emissions testing that will be conducted by the Emissions Research and Measurement Division of Environment Canada. The testing is being done to confirm the real world reductions obtained with the XTRM Cat.


ESW catalyst engineers devised a new catalyst configuration based on the Company's California Air Resources Board Level II verified proprietary catalyzed metallic substrate. This new catalyst design was introduced into a year long test and evaluation program at an internationally recognized emission testing facility located in the United States. During this evaluation program, the XTRM Cat(TM) first demonstrated its ability to reduce particulate matter, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide within the extreme operating conditions of the locomotive diesel engine exhaust.


Locomotive engines typically exhibit relatively high patrticulate matter emissions. This demonstration program focuses on implementing low sulfur distillate fuel along with a catalytic solution to dramatically reduce particulate matter emission levels. Due to the two stroke engine design and high lubrication oil consumption, these engines are extremely difficult to apply a catalyst as they are very susceptible to particulate matter accumulation and face plugging. In addition any changes in exhaust backpressure created by exhaust after treatment can result in the engine producing additional particulate matter. The characteristics of the Company's metallic substrate allowed ESWA engineers to compensate for this extreme application.


The ESW XTRM Cat locomotive oxidation catalyst is a passive system that does not rely on complicated electronics, heated elements or fuel additives to reduce PM emissions. The oxidation catalyst placement, located in close proximity to the combustion chamber, achieves emissions reductions through the proficient utilization of available heat and exhaust pressure created by the two-stroke operating cycle. The ESW locomotive catalyst is a "one cylinder, one catalyst" system designed to operate reliably without the need for routine maintenance or extensive installation downtime.


A vast majority of the approximately 20,000 operating locomotive engines were manufactured between 1973 and 2001, predating environmental rules. Moving forward, these locomotive engines will be retrofit to Tier Zero emission standards under the promulgated EPA locomotive emission standards. Cleaner fuels and viable oxidation catalysts such as the XTRM Cat have the potential to achieve substantial particulate matter emission reductions beyond the Tier zero standards.
