Ostrom says that the triple bottom line refers to the need for sustainable businesses to provide benefits in three ways. It must have a benefit to the environment or the world at large; it must have a benefit to the community, through for instance living wages for employees; and of course it must make a profit.


In other words, the triple bottom line is doing business in a way that brings benefit to people, planet, and profit.
