Solar water for Iraq

From the beginning the Bush Administration wanted to conduct the Iraq War on the cheap.

In this world you get what you pay for.

Knowing the infrastructure would be broken - either through neglect or damage done in the invasion - the plan was to repair existing water, sewer and power systems, not to bring in expensive new equipment. The few days, weeks, months after initial hostilities ended the people of Iraq were expecting more than a patch job from the world’s richest country. Planeload after planeload of spanking new electric generators, truck after truck of bottled water might have won the hearts and minds early on. Our troops might be home by now.

Pay now or pay later. Had we paid then, we, and the Iraqis, might not be paying later in more ways than monetary.

Fortunately, at its core America is kind hearted and often, through individual action or organizations, will reach out in an attempt to right a wrong.

One of those organizations working to improve the situation for the Iraqis is the Morrell Foundation. The Morrell Foundation’s work is dedicated to providing hope and assistance, to people across the world who have been affected by natural disaster, armed conflict or poverty. Part of its work is provide clean water to people in need.

The organization has purchased, for $900,000, 12 solar powered water purification systems from WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corp. to be donated to the US military for distribution to families in the Euphrates Valley of Iraq. The totally portable systems have the ability to supply 30,000 gallons per day of clean fresh water for drinking or irrigation. The Mobile MaxPure (tm) units can also provide 3.2 kilowatts of electrical power.

Delivery of the 12 MaxPure units to the US military for Iraqi placement was organized and managed by Millennium KI, LLC, a military supply contractor for civil action and humanitarian needs which provides solutions using advanced technology and expertise in worldwide crises response to complex emergencies, and humanitarian and disaster relief initiatives.

“The Iraqi farmers do not have reliable power from the electric grid to operate their irrigation pumps or treat their water for drinking,” said Quentin T. Kelly, Chairman & CEO of WorldWater & Solar Technologies Corp. “When we received an e-mail from the Marines at Camp Fallujah requesting water purification units, we moved immediately. Morrell and Millennium responded equally. I understand families are drinking directly from the river, which of course is seriously polluted. Within 30 minutes of Max’s arrival on site, the people will be able to drink purified water from the river and able to start irrigating crops.”

The units are scheduled for pickup and delivery from WorldWater Headquarters in Ewing, NJ by the US Army on December 15 for immediate air shipment to Baghdad and Marine distribution into the Euphrates Valley.

The Mobile MaxPure unit can also desalinate brackish or sea water. It will operate from sunshine alone or in combination with a power grid. It is also equipped with a back-up generator and a battery bank for 24-hour use.
