WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Merck & Co Inc has recalled 12 lots of vaccines for children because there is no assurance the ingredients are sterile, U.S. health officials said on Wednesday.

The company recalled 10 lots of its PedvaxHIB vaccine and two lots of its Comvax vaccine, the Food and Drug Administration said in a notice on its Web site. Both vaccines protect against a common cause of pneumonia, meningitis and upper respiratory infections. Comvax also prevents hepatitis

"These lots of PedvaxHIB and COMVAX are being recalled due to lack of assurance of product sterility," the FDA notice said.
