With summer just around the proverbial corner, we thought the time was ripe for a sunscreen refresher course. ENN Radio's Jerry Kay caught up with Dr. Warwick Morison, chairman of the Skin Cancer Foundation's Photobiology Committee.

With summer just around the proverbial corner, we thought the time was ripe for a sunscreen refresher course. ENN Radio's Jerry Kay caught up with Dr. Warwick Morison, chairman of the Skin Cancer Foundation's Photobiology Committee.

Dr. Morison, a professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University, advises that fair-skinned people use sunscreen on a daily basis and make sure that the brand they buy protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Avoiding sunlight exposure between 10am and 4pm, also helps, as does wearing protective clothing, including a hat. With these protective measures in place, everyone should be able to enjoy the outdoors without fearing skin cancer or undue skin damage. You can find more tips at www.skincancer.org.

Next in this week's ENN Radio program lineup, Kay takes another angle on the sun, speaking with Henry Gentenaar of Reware, Inc. Reware produces an innovative line of solar bags they call "Juice Bags." Giving people the freedom to roam while staying plugged is one of the driving ideas behind Juice Bags, which make a brilliant connection between consumers and renewable energy.

With integrated high power solar panels, the bags allow business travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone on the go with appliances like iPods or cell phones to stay plugged in wherever the sun shines. Waterproof and rugged, the solar panels put out close to seven watts and use common car adapters. Learn more about this exciting, innovative product at www.rewarestore.com.

Jerry Kay's next guest, ornithologist Dr. Jamie Rotenberg, says that ordinary citizens can make a real difference in improving the odds for the painted bunting. This small, brilliantly-colored migratory bird is on the decline in North and South Carolina, most likely due to coastal development.

Dr. Rotenberg needs volunteers in those states to participate on the Painted Bunting Observer Team. Team members would record their observations of painted buntings in their backyards or at other specific sites, to help Dr. Rotenburg's team collect the data necessary to evaluate the birds' condition. Finally, Jerry Kay spends some time with Jen Boulden, co-founder of Idealbite.com. Five days a week, Idealbite's newsletter offers subscribers tips for incorporating environmentally friendly practices into their lives. Rather than finger-wagging, Idealbite takes a humorous approach to advocating living more lightly. Believing that "incremental environmentalism" -- small changes adding up to bigger impacts -- has the potential for effectiveness where more radical approaches fail, Boulden says that taking a more modern, moderate approach is what Idealbite is all about. Check it out at www.idealbite.com.
