With summer just around the proverbial corner, we thought the time was ripe for a sunscreen refresher course. ENN Radio's Jerry Kay caught up with Dr. Warwick Morison, chairman of the Skin Cancer Foundation's Photobiology Committee.
Dr. Morison, a professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University, advises that fair-skinned people use sunscreen on a daily basis and make sure that the brand they buy protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Avoiding sunlight exposure between 10am and 4pm, also helps, as does wearing protective clothing, including a hat. Jerry Kay's next guest, ornithologist Dr. Jamie Rotenberg, says that ordinary citizens can make a real difference in improving the odds for the painted bunting. This small, brilliantly-colored migratory bird is on the decline in North and South Carolina, most likely due to coastal development.
Dr. Rotenberg needs volunteers in those states to participate on the Painted Bunting Observer Team. Team members would record their observations of painted buntings in their backyards or at other specific sites, to help Dr. Rotenburg's team collect the data necessary to evaluate the birds' condition.
