NEW YORK -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has ended its boycott of POM Wonderful after the pomegranate juice maker said last week it had stopped testing on animals.

"POM's decision to end animal tests is a victory for common sense and consumers as well as for rabbits and mice," PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich said in a statement.

Friedrich said clinical trials on human volunteers produce far more accurate and reliable results than do tests on animals of other species.

POM became a target of animal rights activists because of research the company did into the medical benefit of pomegranate juice.

On Jan. 17, the owners of POM parent Roll International, Lynda and Stewart Resnick, said the company had ceased all animal testing and had no plans to do so in the future.
