CUPERTINO, Calif. — Apple Computer, Inc. today announced a free recycling program for iPod, the world's most popular digital music player. The company joins the likes of Dell computer, which this week announced similar plans to up its computer equipment recycling.


Beginning today, iPod owners can bring iPods they no longer want to any of Apple's 100 retail stores in the US for free environmentally friendly disposal, and those who drop off an iPod, iPod mini or iPod photo will receive a 10 percent discount on the purchase of a new iPod that day.


Apple says that the iPods received for recycling in the US are processed domestically and no hazardous material is shipped overseas.


Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. The company endured difficulty in the 1990s as the Microsoft Windows platform took over the PC landscape; Apple's share of the personal computer market fell to below 10%.


Today Apple's iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store are revolutionizing the music industry.


Apple computer is traded on the Nasdaq National Market (ticker: AAPL). The company has more than 11,000 employees and had revenue of more than $8 billion in 2004.
