NEW YORK (Reuters) - UnitedHealth Group Inc., one of the largest providers of health insurance in the United States, has paid $20 million to 37 states in order to settle claims processing problems, according to the New York State Department of Insurance.

New York received $4 million, the largest ever health-related settlement entered into by the department, according to Superintendent Eric Dinallo.

The health insurer also began a three-year plan to improve its claims processing, the department said.

UnitedHealth could not be reached for comment immediately.

The settlement followed nationwide complaints and coordinated investigations by state regulators of the insurer's claims practices, which included explanations of benefits, appeals and grievances, the department said in a statement. (Reporting by Ed Leefeldt)
