Oct. 15—FONTANA, Calif. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ordered aluminum recyler Timco, Standard and Tandem, Inc. earlier this month to take steps to lower the levels of dioxin it emits.
The levels of dioxin, a known carcinogen, the Etiwanda Avenue company was releasing out of its rotary furnace exceeded the federal standard set by the Clean Air Act, according to the EPA.
"They need to either change their process or add emissions controls," said Matt Haber, the deputy director of the air division for EPA Region 9.
That means, Haber said, that the company must implement technology that has been shown to reduce dioxin emissions.
TST has agreed to comply with the EPA order, an EPA spokesman said.
Executives at the company could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
Dioxin, a common industrial by-product, can be formed during the melting of aluminum, Haber said.
Regulators asked TST to provide emissions information earlier this year, and tests run between March and July showed the elevated dioxin levels.
