EarthNews Radio: History of Cities
What is the relationship cities have to their natural world? In the past cities were smaller, but as they've grown, the challenge to balance urbanity with nature becomes greater.
Jerry Kay spoke with Joel Kotkin, the author of The City: A Global History:
Kotkin says that the history of cities is really a history of how we create environments that are urban but are also at harmony with nature. How do we reign in pollution and other environmental problems while providing urban services? Ironically, the progressives, who wanted to fix many urban problems, portended the advent of suburbs.
