As spring slips into summer, one great way to mark the change of seasons is to view wildflowers as they come and go. This is a perfect time of year to do just that.


Jerry Kay spoke to David Lucas, who writes the "Naturalist's Almanac" column for "California Wild" magazine, published by the California Academy of Sciences:

Lucas says that depending on where you are, wildflowers are blooming or going to seed. For instance in mountain areas, the blooming level goes upslope.


He says that it's a different way of looking at the world -- not just enjoying a moment, but also seeing patterns develop and change, both over the landscape and over time as the season passes, much like individual film frames that comprise a movie.
