November’s California Lodging Expo and Conference to Have Green Theme

The California Lodging Expo and Conference will have a green theme next month. The event will be held at the Oakland Marriott City Center from November 6 to 7 and feature four environment-related sessions. The event will also include presentations by the following prominent industry leaders: Niki Leondakis, COO, Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group; Nancy Johnson, EVP, Carlson Hotels Worldwide; and Chip Conley, founder & CEO, Joie de Vivre Hospitality.

OAKLAND, CALIF.—The California Lodging Expo and Conference will have a green theme next month. The event will be held at the Oakland Marriott City Center from November 6 to 7 and feature four environment-related sessions. The event will also include presentations by the following prominent industry leaders: Niki Leondakis, COO, Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group; Nancy Johnson, EVP, Carlson Hotels Worldwide; and Chip Conley, founder & CEO, Joie de Vivre Hospitality.

In the session entitled, “Kermit was wrong! It’s Easy Being Green!”, Wen-I Chang, Atman Hospitality Group, and Stefan Muhle, The Orchard Garden Hotel, will discuss the process of building green hotels, LEED certification and provide information on sustainable site development, water, energy efficiency and more.

Heather Christensen and David Fraser, Panergetices, will present, “Creating Natural Spaces that are Psychologically ‘Green.’” In this session, the focus will be on creating natural spaces that are psychologically green by incorporating universal principles of environmental psychology—principles that can make guests feel relaxed, sleep better and have a more enjoyable stay.

In “Save Energy: Financial Incentives Available to Boost Your Bottom Line,” three speakers will provide an overview of programs that provide financial incentives (in addition to utility bill savings) to reduce a property’s energy consumption. The speakers will include: Paul Tyno, Energy Curtailment Specialists; Michael Drury, Ecology Action; Rich Fox, Intergy Corp.; and Steve Hutchison, PG&E.

In “Greening Your Hotel: Operations, Supplies, Marketing and P.R.,” attendees can learn about the regulations and green programs that already exist in the lodging industry, and how one can make the green movement work to one’s advantage. The speakers for this session include: Jeff Slye, Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group; Pierre Bee, Orbeco Inc.; and Elisabeth Scharbaum, chic-hotels.
