WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An inmate who said he had chest pains overpowered two guards at a Maryland hospital on Wednesday, shot a man outside the hospital and commandeered his vehicle as a getaway car, state police said.

It was the second time a prisoner had escaped from Laurel Regional Hospital since November.

State police identified the prisoner as Kelvin Polk, who was convicted of kidnapping and carjacking. He seized the weapons from his guards, apparently shot off his leg shackles, outmaneuvered a third security official and fled outside where he shot a driver in the head, pushed him out of the car, and drove away, setting off a manhunt in Laurel, a suburb between Washington and Baltimore.

Police said the man he shot was in good condition.
