Election 2008: Barack Obama on Offshore Drilling

Obama opposes more offshore drilling and does not favor ending the federal moratorium that has protected most U.S. waters since the early 1980s, but he has said he would be willing to compromise on that position if offshore drilling were included as part of an overarching strategy to lower energy costs.

"My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama told The Palm Beach Post in late July 2008.

Did Obama Reverse Course on Offshore Drilling?
Having expressed unqualified opposition to offshore drilling since June 2008, when McCain and President Bush called on Congress to end the moratorium, Obama drew criticism from environmentalists and other supporters for the apparent change in his position.
