Greening the Lunch Truck

What's for lunch? It's a universal question that many of us working stiffs have to figure out every day. You have a finite amount of time, and don't want to spend it driving around, or walking far. And yet you want to eat healthy. All those criteria don't usually come together. Until Green Truck. Green Truck is an LA based company that has taken the iconic lunch truck concept and given it a thorough greening, from what they serve to how the serve it, even what powers their vehicles.

Green Truck is an LA based company that has taken the iconic lunch truck concept and given it a thorough greening, from what they serve to how the serve it, even what powers their vehicles.

More then an opportunist slapping a cool name on a half done concept, they reuse their own and other food service companies vegetable oil to fuel their vehicles. All ingredients are organic. And they make sure to create offerings that are attractive on their own merits, not merely good for the planet or good for you. This, in my opinion, is of key importance to take things like this beyond the already convinced, to those that might not otherwise bother with "green" things.

While others might stop at what the public sees, for example their all bio-compostable packaging/utensils, Green Truck goes further, with a solar powered kitchen, locally sourced ingredients, and all environmentally friendly cleaning products.

Beyond being a mobile lunch wagon, they do cater specific events, festivals, film shoots and the like. If you think about it, their set up enables them to be greener then the average caterer, as the food can be served directly from the vehicle, one with a story to boot.

The only question I have is, how are their prices? Yes, there's numerous additional considerations they've put into play here in creating their offerings, but if their price is far beyond what people might otherwise spend on a quick meal, an opportunity to reach more may be being missed. The People's Grocery in West Oakland does a top job of this, in terms of bringing healthy food to underserved populations.
