Whole Foods founder and CEO John Mackey generates schizoid reactions in the enviro community. He is hailed for showing that organic food can be the basis for a large, thriving business and for formulating new, strict animal-treatment standards, but decried for pushing out small, local farmers and vendors, opposing unions, and not voting for John Kerry or Ralph Nader (gasp!). He's a proud libertarian who caps his own salary and offers rare autonomy and benefits to his employees. Mackey chats with Grist Magazine.
