Mendelson says that several companies are looking to produce pharmaceutics and chemicals through cheaper means. They'll do this by engineering corn or tobacco plants to produce those materials for a variety of industrial uses.
But though farming may create a new range of products, it could also impact our food and our environment. The products could be treatments for AIDS or insecticides, but also raise concerns about other possible effects of these engineered plants.
