Global climate change will be a major focus at this week's G8 Summit. Scotland, host of the summit, is committed to innovation in the renewable energy sector and, as such, has created a solid industry and government support mechanism to achieve its aggressive renewable energy targets - 40 percent by 2020.

Scotland, host of the summit, is committed to innovation in the renewable energy sector and, as such, has created a solid industry and government support mechanism to achieve its aggressive renewable energy targets - 40 percent by 2020.
Capitalizing on the opportunities offered by the country's natural resources, Scotland has much to offer the world in its renewable power generation capabilities and expertise, particularly in the area of wind energy.
It is estimated that Scotland has up to 11.5 GW of onshore wind energy resources and up to 25 GW in offshore wind farming capacity. At an estimate of 3 MW per turbine, this amount equates to potentially 1,200 dedicated turbines.

"Scottish companies such as Chillwind and Renewable Devices are at the forefront of developing innovative wind energy solutions that will be key to helping us meet our renewable energy targets."
Chillwind, based at Gleneagle in Ross-shire has teamed up with Sweden's AQSystems to develop the Wind Profiler, a meteorological mast used to record wind data. The invention was awarded Best Renewable Innovation of 2004 at the Scottish Green Energy Awards 2004. The Wind Profiler is capable of acquiring highly accurate wind speed data up to a height of 150 metres, when traditional masts have only been able to reach 70 metres. The unit is also mobile, allowing wind experts to use the new technology at remote locations, often the best places for wind farm sites.
Additionally, Renewable Devices has developed a silent and vibration free wind turbine capable of mounting on domestic and commercial dwellings. It is expected that the Swift Rooftop Wind Energy System(TM) will produce up to 4000 kWh of electrical energy and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1.6 tons per year.
In its commitment to renewable energy adoption, the Swift Rooftop Wind Energy System(TM) is being utilized by Scottish and Southern Energy to help provide renewable energy to communities across the United Kingdom.
