Pratt & Whitney has hired an MIT Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics to lead strategy and technology development programs aimed at improving environmental performance and reducing impact on the environment.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney today named an MIT expert to lead Pratt & Whitney's strategy and technology development programs aimed at improving environmental performance and reducing impact on the environment.


Pratt and Whitney named Dr. Alan Epstein, a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT to the post.


"At Pratt & Whitney, we believe next generation engines will be a large part of the solution as the aviation industry looks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase efficiency," said Pratt & Whitney president Steve Finger. "In his new position, Alan will lead Pratt & Whitney's environmental initiatives, drawing on resources from across the company and the corporation to identify, evaluate and execute new ways to improve engine fuel efficiency, reduce noise and combustion emissions, and develop alternative fuel technologies. I look forward to the opportunity to help bring new environmental technologies to our customers."

Alan's research and teaching at MIT has been focused on power and energy, aerospace propulsion, turbomachinery and noise, measurement and instrumentation, and microsystems. He holds numerous patents and has published more than 100 academic articles.


Alan holds a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT.
