LOS ANGELES — As the new school year begins, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is partnering with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in sponsoring a series of 17 teacher training workshops this fall.Seven different types of workshops are offered to public, private and parochial school teachers in grades kindergarten to eighth grade in the City. The workshops include four sessions on basic electricity, which includes a comprehensive kit, and three sessions on electric circuits that cover lighting for the holiday season. Additional sessions will cover water science, ecology and general environmental subjects.
The workshops are held at five LAUSD Math, Science and Technology Centers in Van Nuys, North Hollywood, Mar Vista, San Pedro and East Los Angeles.
"The purpose of the workshop series is to help teachers enhance student learning. We are emphasizing basic electricity, a key subject covered in the state mandated tests in science at the elementary level," said LADWP General Manager Ronald Deaton.
Each session provides teachers at no cost not only hands-on lesson materials that can be presented the following day, but also presenters model the best methods to convey lessons effectively. Workshop presenters are either current classroom teachers or retired teachers with expertise and experience in science.
Under the partnership arrangement, LADWP generally funds the costs of the lesson materials and presenters. LADWP also sends information to public and private schools and individual teachers about the workshop series. LAUSD provides the workshop sites, salary point credit or honorariums for participating teachers. The District also provides assistance in communicating information to teachers about the schedule and administers the reservations.
The LADWP Teacher Workshop Series is coordinated with LAUSD Instructional Services Unit that manages the District's Math, Science and Technology Centers. These centers sponsor additional workshop series and provide materials and lessons that teachers can check out or use to enhance student learning.
The LADWP Workshop Series has been provided on an ongoing basis for more than 15 years and has assisted hundreds of teachers in public, private and parochial schools throughout the city of Los Angeles and the LAUSD. Between 30 and 50 LADWP-sponsored workshops have been held annually.

The Teacher Workshop Series is part of the LADWP Educational Partnership Program that also includes the Science Bowl, Adopt-A-School Program, Youth Service Academy and the Times in Education Program.
