Conservation groups have identified six iconic English waterways that are severely at risk from Britain's lack of care for its rivers and lakes. They have joined forced to call on the government to adopt the Blueprint for Water, which outlines a comprehensive approach to preserving our vital and much-loved water resources.

Tom Le Quesne, Freshwater Policy Officer for WWF-UK said: "This country is defined by its beautiful waterways. Our patchworks of fields and dappled woodlands rely on them and our elegant towns are invariably built on their banks, but these waterways are being wrecked by poor management. The fact that organisations representing over six million people in this country have come together to support the Blueprint for Water underlines how serious the need is for a new way of dealing with England's water crisis."

The Blueprint for Water campaign was launched in November last year by 10 of the country's leading environment, fisheries and water efficiency organisations. For further details visit www.blueprintforwater.org.uk.
