1. Make sure your weather stripping and attic insulation are both in good condition. If there are cracks or decay in either one, you could be letting heat escape, wasting precious energy.

2. Create a compost pile for recycling waste into lawn fertilizer. Fall is the perfect time to build it – all the dead leaves in your yard will make a perfect addition to the pile.

3. Unless you need to lug your bike around in winter, ditch your car's roof rack until the weather warms up. The extra weight of a rack can reduce your car's fuel mileage.

4. Buy a programmable thermostat. Such thermostats automatically shut off once they reach your specified temperature, saving you up to 10% on all your heating bills.

5. Check out your local secondhand shops for warm clothing, rather than heading to the mall. You'll find plenty of great stuff in the bargain bins – and it's a good way to avoid wastefulness by giving clothing a second life.
