HONG KONG — Hong Kong and most of its neighboring areas in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong suffer from air quality that nears mainland Chinese pollution standards, new data announced Wednesday showed.
The worst air is in the area circled by the cities Zhongshan, Foshan, Guangzhou and Dongguan, where the air quality is generally substandard.
Guangdong is one of China's biggest manufacturing bases. Its air pollution often blows down to Hong Kong, whose skyline is frequently obscured by haze.
The new data was collected by Hong Kong and Guangdong environmental protection authorities at 16 monitoring stations scattered across the two regions as part of a new Internet air quality service launched Wednesday. The data will be updated daily.
The new service measures pollutants including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, breathable suspended particles and ozone, but it doesn't provide readings for individual pollutants.

"We only want to give a general picture to members of the public," said Natalia Leung, a spokeswoman for Hong Kong's Environmental Protection Department.
