NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. average retail gasoline prices hit a record $3.227 a gallon on Tuesday, surpassing the previous peak hit in May 2007, travel and auto group AAA said in its daily survey.

Retail gasoline and heating oil prices have surged in recent weeks due to a rapid increase in costs for crude. AAA's daily gasoline survey is based on prices at more than 85,000 self-serve stations.
