and September of 2005 were the warmest of those two months on record there. The
average temperature for the two months was 68.9 degrees.
The record had been held in August and September of 2002, when the average temperature
of 68.6 degrees beat the record held the previous year. In 2001 a record of 67.5 was
set.
The record in Boston joins the growing body of evidence that the world is getting
warmer. Single-location heat records have been set all over the world in the 1990s and
2000s, adding to observations of melting permafrost and polar ice.
The Blue Hill weather station in Milton, Massachusetts, where these temperatures were
taken, has been keeping records since 1885. That is the longest continuous climate
observation in one place in North America.
